Why am I doing this?

Writer: Julian S. ScottJulian S. Scott

If I had to guess, it is probably a combination of reaching a point in my life where it’s natural to re-evaluate your priorities and how you want to focus your energies as well as attempting to navigating a global pandemic where many of us were forced to slow down and ponder what really matters. For me, it was the realization I want to support the performing arts in my adopted hometown and country in any way I can for as long as I can be useful.

Taking a step back, this story really starts here …

Though originally from San Francisco, I now call Vancouver home and like many Vancouverites, I somehow have overlooked the many incredible performing arts organizations and artists here. I tend to travel a lot for most of my adult life so I would go to the opera, symphony or whatever while away such in cities like New York, Paris or Budapest—all famous for their embrace of the performing arts and classical music. That all changed a few years ago right before the pandemic with a last-minute opportunity to attend a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet by Ballet BC.

I was on the edge of my seat as if I have never seen it before—it was truly spectacular. I was honestly stunned (and somewhat embarrassed) to learn that this incredible arts organization right here in Vancouver was internationally acclaimed and yet I had never heard of it. Afterwards, someone referred to Ballet BC as one of Vancouver’s “best kept secrets” though I am pretty sure it would be better for all if this secret was out.

This was a start to a now multi-year journey of discovery to learn more about the different local performing arts organization, leaders and the artists themselves. To say it was a revelation to discover that some of the world’s best performing arts organizations and artists are right under our noses would be an understatement. The more I learned, the more determined I have become to not only personally support the arts and artists here, but to actively make sure everyone else who will listen knows that Vancouver (as well as across Canada) has a vibrant and talented classical arts scene that deserves our attention, admiration and patronage.

I suspect some may think I’m wasting my time, and truth be told I am sometimes surprised by the lack of interest or tepid response I have gotten from some corners, but change does not happen overnight. At the end of the day, if I’m able to inspire even one person to buy a ticket and attend a performance try something new whether it’s the ballet, the opera, the symphony, etc., that is one more than yesterday. Hopefully that person will then inspire others to do the same.

Vancouver is so much more than good food and beautiful views—and I can prove it.
